The messes we made are my favourite works of art

How can you fit the beauty of Icelandic landscapes, the frenetic intensity of friendships, the nostalgia of memories you'll soon forget, all into one short video? You can't... but I tried with this film.

The definition of a passion project, this short has a special place in my heart. It features an absolutely beautiful poem by the amazing Lucie Vovk, and despite the film's rough edges, it still makes me smile whenever I watch it.

It also made it into a few travel film festivals, which was cool.

I visited the same places - the black church at Búðir, the black sands at Vik, the ‘diamond beach’ at Jökulsárlón. I saw the same unnerving, ethereal, alienating landscape. I took the same camera. And yet Iceland in December 2016 was a world apart from Iceland in July 2018. Of course, holidays with friends are markedly different to travelling with family. The daylight hours certainly made an impact, the post-graduation exhaustion did too. But there was something else that made the two trips feel so different...
