Angelique Jutand | The LNP Sessions

Three beautiful songs by the wonderful Angelique Jutand, an up-and-coming French artist. Her haunting voice and hypnotic ukulele finger-picking frame the dual themes of strength and fragility present throughout her lyrics.

In recording these live sessions, I tried to reflect both the intimacy and universalism in her music, in different ways. For Empreinte and Forever on Discount, I utilised an anamorphic lens, whose flares both provide aesthetic beauty and cut across, obfuscate and overwhelm - with varying degrees of camera movement for each. Kay, meanwhile, employs the power of the ‘oner’ (long take) - we are made witness to every second of the music, never allowed respite through a cut.

Collaborations with Jay Richardson

A good friend and brilliant composer, Jay Richardson has won dozens of awards and scholarships for his music - I have had the privilege of working with him on a number of occasions.

ONONON and Spacetime is My Playground are experimental takes on live music, directed by me but edited by Jay himself. They consciously subvert the conventionally conservative position held by the organ in society - enjoy a whirligig, transcendental experience and hold on tight! Spacetime was selected for the North Europe International Film Festival.

Shenandoah and My Body is an Ocean are meditation films. The former features time-lapses from a trip to Shenandoah National Park (Virginia) and soulful, pensive synth tones - the latter haunting piano music set to drone footage. These films explore the boundaries of perspective, time and movement, space and place gives way to time, and we are but passengers on the journey. Set back and enjoy.

What's the difference between masculinity and a vase? One is fragile and delicate, the other is a vase. How to Man Up in NYC is a film that was made in two weeks, as part of an Artists in Residence we both held at Mise-en-Place (an art collective in Brooklyn). It was written on the plane out to JFK airport, and edited on the plane home. It follows Jay as an alien, trying to triangulate masculinity in the confusing world of New York. The film was screened at Oaxaca film festival and received special mention at the Asia South-East Short Film festival.

Sofar Sounds

During my final year as an Undergrad, I was the official videographer for Sofar Sounds. This job was a formative one for me - I would turn up at a location, with no idea who was performing, which instruments or microphones were being used, or even what the location looked like. I would then have under an hour to set up multiple cameras, light the room and liaise with the artists. Although incredibly stressful at times, I learnt a huge amount through the experience, and was given the chance to listen to some amazing artists. A selection of the 15+ videos I produced are shown here.
